Located on the northern part of Cozumel, about 8 to 10 miles from town, exist three big lagoons filled with mangroves coves and shallow waters. The three lagoons are so big that you won't be able to wade around one on a single fishing day. Two boats, with two anglers on each boat, can easily fish in one of these lagoons without seeing each other for the entire fishing day. The names of these lagoons are known as : Monte Cristo, Paso de Balem and Rio de la Plata.

These three lagoons are full of bonefish, some baby tarpon, some baby snook and other battlers ( barracuda, snapper, trigger fish, etc.). and between the months of March to September you can find some big permit weighing 25 pounds or more. For fly fishing Monte Cristo is the most highly recommended. It gets the least pressure because it is also the farthest to reach, about a 40 minute boat ride, but it has a clear, very shallow, hard white sand bottom that is perfect for stalking bonefish. The other lagoons are a mix of hard sand bottom and turtle grass.

The trip consists of Bonefishing in those flats.  We operate open flats fishing boats, pongas with molded in casting platforms, in the traditional Mexican style, with Yamaha outboard motors, guide and drinks, purified drinking water, plenty of purified ice and a box lunch on a full day trip. Two fishermen and one guide per boat.

Mostly hard bottom wade fishing (you should bring with you a pair of wading boots or shoes, polarized sunglasses, billed cap, sunscreen and camera)

All of the fishing should be done with light fly or spinning tackle. Tackle is provided but Anglers are encouraged to bring their own gear.

Fly tackle: Fly fishermen need to have at least an 8 weight rod or 7 weight rod, 9' length with fast taper preferred. Reels should be high quality and saltwater proof. A weight forward floating line is all you need. Use of sinking lines is not necessary as the waters are shallow. Bonefish and Permit fly selections should include: Crazy Charlies (root beer, pink, gold, pearl), sizes 2/8, crab patterns (mottled brown and green) rug yarn crab and epoxy fly sizes 4-6. Looking in the Guides fly box I found that the Crazy Charlies in Pearl far outnumbered all others combined. Popular fly patterns for baby tarpon, snook, and barracuda include: deceivers in various colors, cockroach, tarpon glo and poppers (sizes 2/0-4 for all patterns).

Spinning Tackle: Light to medium action spinning rods of 6' to 7' with matching reel loaded with 8-10 lb test (200+ yds) for bonefish and permit. Live crabs (Hard to get) and small jigs with saltwater hooks work best for bonefish and permit, I had good success with a 1/8 oz. jig head with a yellow curly tail grub and the hook tipped with a piece of squid. Larger fish species can be fished with either spinning or baitcasting gear. Reels that hold at least 200 yards of 10-15 lb test should be used on tarpon, snook and barracuda, etc. Recommended lures are floating mirro lures, floating devils horse, floating zara spook, floating rapalas 3-5 inches in length and tube jigs.
